How to get SASO-RoHS certification for electronic appliances in Saudi Arabia
According to the requirements of the draft technical regulation on the restriction of hazardous substances in RoHS electrical and electronic equipment (notification number G/TBT/N/SAU/1166) issued by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Authority (SASO) in December 2020, the content of hazardous substances in all electrical and electronic equipment and devices within the scope must meet the regulatory restrictions before they can enter the Saudi market for sale.
The final regulation was officially announced on July 9, 2021 and will be enforced on January 5, 2022.
Supplier's obligations
Suppliers shall comply with the following requirements:
Technical requirements
To meet the requirements of this regulation, suppliers shall meet the basic characteristics of electrical and electronic equipment and devices as follows:
1) Electrical and electronic equipment and spare parts imported by suppliers shall meet the technical requirements specified in the standards specified in Annex (2-a) of this regulation, and if there are no Saudi or Gulf standards, they shall comply with international standards.
2) The electronic and electrical equipment and devices imported by the supplier shall pass the conformity assessment procedure specified in this Regulation and be accompanied by a technical file, which includes all documents and information that prove that the product conforms to the requirements of this Regulation.
3) Availability of an effective quality management system (manufacturers who have obtained a management system certificate based on the requirements of the relevant ISO 9001 or its equivalent standard shall be deemed to meet the requirements of this article).
Basic requirements
To meet the requirements of this Regulation, suppliers shall meet the basic requirements and comply with the permitted percentages of hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment and their spare parts as specified in Annex (1-b) of this Regulation.
Conformity assessment procedure
1. The supplier shall be responsible for ensuring that: the supplier responsible for placing electronic and electrical equipment on the market shall obtain a certificate of conformity issued by a certification body approved by SASO in accordance with the conformity assessment table (type 1a) specified in ISO/IEC 17067. A test report issued by an accredited laboratory proving that the product complies with the RoHS technical limits is required, and the manufacturer shall also issue a declaration of conformity document.
2. The product should be accompanied by technical documentation, which should include:
A) Declaration of conformity by the supplier (manufacturer/importer);
B) Risk assessment document;
C) Warnings, precautions and manuals necessary for the correct and safe use of the product.
